Youth

“Hourahine’s Martial Arts youth programs have kept Lee focused and confident during the difficult transition from middle school to high school. We are greatful to the excellent instructors for taking the time to ensure Lee gets what he needs to become a strong young person.” – Parents of 13 year old student
Children develop and learn at different rates and as their environment changes so does our youth martial arts programming. Our mixed martial arts approach to youth training allows participants to learn a variety of teaching and training formats, as well as gain exposure to the many approaches to martial arts training. This program helps boost confidence, self esteem, and produce quality, applicable technical results.
Elements of the youth program include:
GOJUKAI KARATE – students progress at their own pace through the Gojukai system which teaches the participants to use blocking, striking, evasion, and grappling tactics. Requirements for belt levels are readily communicated and belts are earned by, not simply given to, the students.
STREETPROOFING – youth train for effective transfer of their martial arts skills to the self defense / street environment. This is accomplished by realistic training drills, awareness practice, discussion and role playing.
CONDITIONING – Achieving and maintaining good physical condition is key in driving good karate techniques as well as building strong esteem and personal image.
LIFESKILLS – Adding to the valuable technical and physical skills, students learn positive imaging techniques, awareness, goal setting and social interaction.
All of our classes are taught by black belt instructors and coaches recognized nationally and internationally by the World Karate Federation, the Karate Canada, Karate Ontario, and the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

Although not mandatory for program participation or advancement, Hourahine’s Martial Arts offers an accredited athlete development program for the emerging Olympic sport of Karate.
When taught correctly, competition can be very healthy for young men and women. Our program focuses on goal development and personal achievement, not necessarily winning medals or trophies. Our developing athletes rarely cite winning as a reason for participating. They more often list learning new skills or physical competence, being with friends in a group, fun and excitement, or staying in shape as reasons for their involvement.
Our athletes compete locally and provincially, with some making National and International Teams. Olympic Karate is governed by the International Olympic Committee, the World Karate Federation, Karate Canada, and Karate Ontario.
