Adults

“Martial Arts have always been something I was interested in pursuing but as often happens as an adult, life got in the way. Hourahine’s Martial Arts helped me start on the path to a lifelong dream by providing a program that is challenging enough to meet my physical and mental needs but flexible enough to ensure my family and work life can still come first.” – Adult Beginner Student
Adults have distinctly different needs from children and youth. Therefore our martial arts program caters directly to the priorities of leading a dynamic adult life.
Elements of the adult program include:
GOJUKAI KARATE – students progress at their own pace through the Gojukai system which teaches the participants to use blocking, striking, evasion, and grappling tactics. Adults have the opportunity to exam for belt levels through the Tradtional Goju Ryu Association of Canada.
SPORT and SELF DEFENSE – adults train for effective transfer of their martial arts skills to the self defense and sport environment. This is accomplished by realistic training drills, awareness practice, discussion and scenario training.
CONDITIONING – Achieving and maintaining good physical condition is key in driving good karate techniques as well as reducing stress and increasing personal image.
LIFESKILLS – Adding to the valuable technical and physical skills, students learn positive imaging techniques, awareness, goal setting, and meditation, in an enjoyable social environment.
All of our classes are taught by black belt instructors and coaches recognized nationally and internationally by the World Karate Federation, the Karate Canada, Karate Ontario, and the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

Although not mandatory for program participation or advancement, Hourahine’s Martial Arts offers an accredited athlete development program for the emerging Olympic sport of Karate.
When taught correctly, competition can be an excellent sport pursuit men and women. Our program focuses on goal development and personal achievement, not necessarily winning medals or trophies. Our developing athletes rarely cite winning as a reason for participating. They more often list learning new skills or physical competence, being with friends in a group, fun and excitement, or staying in shape as reasons for their involvement.
Our athletes compete locally and provincially, with some making National and International Teams. Olympic Karate is governed by the International Olympic Committee, the World Karate Federation, Karate Canada, and Karate Ontario.
